BYD's Shark 6 has become Australia's best-selling plug-in hybrid of all time, surpassing the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in just 12 months. This unprecedented demand has allowed BYD to sell more Shark 6 utes than more than a decade of Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV deliveries. And there's more good news coming for BYD. The BYD Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV is outselling the Mitsubishi Outlander by nearly four to one, with 15,253 sales compared to the Outlander's 4,110. The Shark 6 deliveries only commenced in January 2025, yet its tally has already surpassed the 16,949 Outlander PHEVs delivered in Australia since the original's launch in March 2014. The Outlander all but kick-started the rollout of PHEV power in Australia, whereas the Shark 6 has launched now that the technology is mature. The Sealion 6 is currently about 2000 cumulative sales behind the Outlander, but with prices starting about $20,000 lower, it could take second place by the end of 2026. However, it is facing competition from other Chinese brands and the new BYD Sealion 5, due in early 2026 with a starting price $9,000 lower. Outlander PHEV sales are likely to pick up once the updated model, which brings a longer electric range and new features, reaches showrooms. A full breakdown of plug-in hybrid sales is yet to be published, but it is expected the GWM Haval H6 will claim fourth place with about 2,500 deliveries, ahead of the GWM Cannon Alpha ute.
